The power converters HL-LHC2kA-10V are four-quadrant linear and modular converters that can provide voltages ranging from -10 volts to 10 volts and currents ranging from -2000 amperes to 2000 amperes.

Comprised of approximately 30.000 electro-mechanical components, these power converters have been meticulously designed by a team of SY-EPC engineers and technicians to comply with their stringent specifications. Special attention was given to ensuring high levels of availability, precision, and safety for both personnel and machine equipment.

The power converters HL-LHC2kA-10V consist of two main components:

  • The power racks, which were installed in SM18 for the HL-LHC IT String during March.
  • The power modules, which arrived at CERN in late April and were manufactured, as pre-series version, by a Spanish company named Jema Energy.

In the HL-LHC, these power converters will have two primary missions. Firstly, they are responsible for trimming the current of the main HL-LHC Inner Triplet magnets. Secondly, they supply power to the Inner Triplet orbit corrector magnets.

Upon completion of the testing phase in the HL-LHC IT String, these power converters will be dismantled and will undergo further upgrades (to the series version) to prepare them for final installation in the HL-LHC particle accelerator.
