By Florence Thompson and Délio Duarte Ramos (CERN)
After a long journey from Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, the third cryo-assembly (named LQXFA04) from the United States Accelerator Upgrade Program (US-AUP) has been successfully delivered to CERN. Having arrived on 6th of August, it will now undergo incoming inspection, followed by a horizontal cold test and finally the second phase of cryostat assembly.
It will be one of the eight US-AUP quadrupoles installed in either the Q1 or Q3 position (first or fourth quadrupole from the interaction point) in the future inner triplet regions either side of ATLAS and CMS in the HL-LHC. The exact position will be decided based on test data and, in the second phase of cryostating, specific equipment will be added and interfaces configured according to the installation slot.
