Beam Gas Curtain collaboration awarded the Faraday Cup
The teams behind the innovative Beam Gas Curtain have been awarded the main international award for innovation in production of operational beam instrumentation.

For the last 10 years, HiLumi LHC Work Package 13 – responsible for Beam Instrumentation – has been working with The Cockcroft Institute, Liverpool University, in the UK, and GSI in Germany on the development of a new Beam Gas Curtain (BGC) profile detector for the accelerator upgrade.
The instrument uses a focused gas “curtain” to observe the LHC beams without disturbing operations, and the HiLumi LHC will be equipped with a BGC instrument on each beam line.
This development has seen a number of successes over recent years, one being an operational instrument already used in the LHC.
The teams behind this successful new instrument have now been awarded the main international award, the Faraday Cup, given for innovation in the production of operational beam instrumentation.
The award was presented at the 15th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC), held in Whistler in September 2026.
