MCBRD01 training at CERN

Last month, the first series D2 corrector magnet, developed in the framework of the IHEP-China in-kind contribution, was tested at CERN. The magnet was manufactured at BAMA. The test at IMP showed the ability to reach ultimate current at 4.5 K, but with a retraining not in line with the requirements (see plot below).

The test at CERN at 1.9 K confirmed the possibility to operate at ultimate current (7.5 TeV operation), and proved the absence of retraining after the thermal cycle. A weakness in the electrical insulation has been identified and did not prevent carrying out the quench test; it has been located in the outer part of the magnet, consolidation is ongoing in 927 lab and will be assessed through an additional cool-down test.
