WP19: Alignment & Internal Metrology

WP19: Alignment & Internal Metrology

WP19 covers the alignment and internal metrology activities for both the Inner Triplet String Test and the LHC tunnel, for all HL-LHC components, divided into the following tasks:

  • Internal metrology, covering manufacturing controls, assembly measurements and mechanical fiducialisation measurements;
  • Internal monitoring, to monitor continuously the position of the Inner Triplet cold masses and crab cavities inside their cryostat;
  • Standard alignment of the components, including the determination and maintenance of the geodetic network, marking (reference axis, beam reference points, jacks’ position, ….), control of jacks’ heads position, initial alignment and the control of their position every year. This also includes as-built measurement in all HL-LHC area, when the LHC tunnel is empty and at different stages of installation until completion;
  • Full Remote Alignment System (FRAS), developed in collaboration between 3 groups: BE-CEM, BE-GM, BE-ICS. FRAS consists of alignment sensors to determine the position of components, motorized adapters to perform their remote adjustment, along with all necessary acquisition, control/command systems, and the corresponding software. It covers the development phase, qualification, procurement, storage, installation and commissioning of all these systems.

The WPL and deputy are charged with the coordination of the efforts within the work package and ensure in conjunction with the HL-LHC project office the progress reporting as well as the documentation and implementation of scope, cost or schedule changes.
